"The Wife's Lament"
I Knitted you the remnants of a dream
The soft Bug-cap to dust your little nose
Oh world and dark and cold beyond
Thee shalt not temper our little home
My husband has built these steady walls
He fortified them beam to beam
I feel safe and happy working in my home
and never want to leave
There is a time to every little purpose
A time to labor and a time to sleep
A time to dress up and a time to put things away
A time for meat and a time for cheese
A time to stack root vegetables in the cellar
A time to stir the pot of bubbling stew
A time to gather up the remnants remaining
and a time for me to sit and wait for you
eight years' love has our memories waxed fondly
eight years of happy memories keep me warm
I never want to go outside without you
I know you'll never let me live alone
I know you love me in spite of the weather
I know you love me in spite of the damp
That though the winds may change and roll in heaven
That you will find your way to my poor lamp
To find me and to kiss me, dearest husband
to hold me in the stillness of the dawn
to kiss me and press your little indian feather
Into my hair that I know I will go on
Will wait for you and hope for you to find me
will wait for you to tread upon the door
Oh little wife all waiting here forever
You see I shall wait on forevermore
No prettier bonnier face nor bust could steal thee
your heart mine never has had strength to betray
in dark and cold my husband leaving my never
My lamplit window a beacon to show you the way
And yea though I wait here for all forever
And though my sadness Pool Around My Feet
And though all manner of rough news abraise me
I shall not let my little hope be bent
Oh Wait Oh Wait to fall into your arms love
Oh home inside my arms never to betray
My love my life and no more shall you leave me
You will come home and On this hope I pray
In Jesus' Name,
Amen
